One of the most frustrating things a couple can hear from a doctor when trying to conceive is, “We don’t know what’s wrong.” Unexplained Infertility can lead down an expensive and time consuming path to pregnancy. Dr. Isabelle Ryan describes the FASTT study that took place from 2001 to 2006 on the Pacific Fertility Center’s blog. The study followed women who chose to try either the traditional IVF or low-tech options such as Clomid or Gonadotropin therapy.
The patients were subjected to one of two treatment plans. The first group went through a conventional treatment plan and the second went through an accelerated course of treatment. The patients closely monitored all costs of the fertility treatments, including extras such as time away from work, additional medicine and counseling. The study focused on comparing how long it took to become pregnant, the healthcare costs associated with the pregnancy and delivery, as well as the pregnancy rates both per cycle and per couple.
The study found that the time it took to become pregnant was shorter for the group going through accelerated treatment versus conventional treatment. The approximate time for the accelerated group was 8 months as compared to 11 months for the conventional treatment group. In the end, the study concluded that accelerated treatment ended up saving money for the patients as well a higher number of couples with a successful pregnancy and delivery.
